Eight different Piper Pirates football players earned awards at last weekend's KCK Preps Awards Presentation. Head coach Chris Brindle and linebacker Colton Beebe took home two of the top three awards.

Piper finds a way, upsets Lansing

It was not exactly pretty Friday night for the Piper Pirates.

The Lansing Lions outgained Piper 339 yards to 153 yards. They outgained the Pirates on the ground 221 yards to 61 yards.

However, there's only one stat that matters at the end of the night.

Piper 21, Lansing 17.

For the second straight week, sophomore quarterback Tanner Eikenbary provided some late-game heroics for the Pirates.

Down 17-7 at halftime, Eikenbary stepped up with two passing touchdowns for the Pirates.

He hit Julian Cole on a 16-yard touchdown pass to cut the gap down to three points.

In the fourth quarter, Eikenbary delivered one more time. He connected on a 7-yard touchdown pass to Colton Beebe, which was the game winner.

With the huge victory in the Kaw Valley League, Piper improves to 3-1.

Matt McDonald led Piper in rushing with 67 yards on 14 carries. He scored the opening touchdown for Piper in the game.

After a tough defensive start against Basehor-Linwood, the Pirates defense has remained steady. They have not allowed more than 17 points in any of the three games since.

AT LONG LAST: Washington snaps 16-game losing streak

Friday's night affair between Atchison and Washington began like many games have for the Wildcats the past two-and-a-half years.

Washington's offense could not get going and they were down by two possessions early.

This time, however, Washington came back to pull the huge upset on Atchison to win their first game since the 2009 season.

Falling behind 14-0 early in the second quarter, the Wildcats stiffened up on defense and quarterback Rainier Kountz-London began leading the offense back.

He punched home a touchdown from four yards out to give the Wildcats their first score of the evening, trimming the lead down to 14-7.

The score remained the same until the fourth quarter when London struck again.

He scored from three yards out.

Head coach Brandon Corbin decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win. The decision paid off - Kountz-London scored on the conversion to win the game.

Washington improves to 1-3 on the season and it's their first Kansas City Kansas -Atchison League victory since 2008.

High school football: Washington snaps 16-game losing streak

The losing streak is over.

The Washington Wildcats upset the Atchison Redmen 15-14 Friday night at Washington High School.

It's the first win for Wildcats head coach Brandon Corbin and it's the first win for the Wildcats football program since the middle of the 2009 season.

Other scores:

PIPER 21, Lansing 17
Schlagle 26, HARMON 24
Mill Valley 53, BISHOP WARD 7
Turner 36, TONGANOXIE 6
BASEHOR-LINWOOD 69, Bonner Springs 26
WYANDOTTE 28, Sumner Academy 14

A temporary farewell

At the end of this weekend, I'll be taking a (likely) temporary hiatus from KCKPreps.com.

No worries - I have found two or three interested participants in putting out content and to help maintain the Website, meaning KCKPreps.com itself will not be going anywhere.

However, I am leaving for now.

I'm not sure when I will return to continue to build this Website. It may be one week, two weeks, two months or six months.

It's a decision that is not enjoyable to make.

But sometimes in life, you need to step back and take a breather on things. Putting in 16 to 18 hours a day in a business is not fun.

It drains energy from you and it makes a negative impact on how you live life.

Over the past two months, I've been a terrible friend to many of my friends. It's unintentional, of course.

It's not my goal to errode friendships and it's something I would not do on purpose.

At this point in my life, however, I've been too obsessed with work and most if not all of my friendships have weakened considerably in the last three months. I've also been a terrible family member. I have not been there enough for my family when they've needed me the most.

During the last two weeks, I have finally realized the concept that friends and family are more important than individual accomplishment. I wish it did not take 26 years and 7 months of my life to realize that, but we all can be late to the game.

Those factors have led to this decision.

I will still post the scores on The Kansan Website and link to KCK Preps content. I may even write a thing or two, but for now, I need to go.

KCK Preps will be in better hands soon and I'm looking forward to that.

Again, thanks to everyone who has been reading this Website.

Once I patch up the loose ends in my social and personal life, I'll return. I'm hoping it's sooner than later

Farewell, my friends.
