Here's a look at Piper Pirates quarterback Tanner Eikenbary.

KCK Preps Prospect: Kendall Short, Mill Valley

Despite missing nearly half the season, Mill Valley Jaguars running back Kendall Short finished with over 700 yards of total offense and 12 touchdowns.

HIGHLIGHTS: Harmon's Darrin Hawkins

Here are highlights of Harmon linebacker/running back/wide receiver Darrin Hawkins.

One look at these highlights will make you understand why I think Hawkins has a very valid argument as being the best all-around football player in Wyandotte County.

Look at the moves and athleticism he displays, particularly in touchdown runs against Atchison and Sumner Academy

With all due respect to Harmon, he's not a hawk.

He's a beast.

District Preview: The Schlagle-Lansing-Bonner Springs-Washington 5A district

District play begins this week.

KCK Preps will preview eachdistrict that's involved with Wyandotte County and I will (attempt) to offer some insight in each district.

Today, we begin in 5A with the district featuring theSchlagle Stallions, Lansing Lions, Bonner Springs Braves and Washington Wildcats.

Here’s a look at some of the storylines going into thedistrict.

THE FAVORITE: Despite Schlagle having a great year, Lansingshould be considered the ever-so-slight favorite coming in. They’ve played atougher schedule than all three programs and will come into district play at3-3. They’ve some of the best teams in the metro area and tallied up animpressive 16-point victory in Turner. The Lions average 301 yards a game, with193 yards of it coming on the ground. Nick Hughes, Joe Schneider (sophomorequarterback) and Litten Van Der Werff lead a rushing game that averages around7 yards a carry. Lansing alsogets Schlagle at home, a key advantage.

DISTRICT IS WIDE OPEN: It’s only one ranking, butMaxPreps.com does a computer system that ranks out the teams. Lansing comesinto the district ranked 93rd, Schlagle 96th and Bonner Springsis 101st. Washington is a distant fourth according to MaxPreps, checking in at the 211th position. If MaxPreps is any indication, the games between Schlagle, Bonner and Lansing might be very competitive. Washington’simproved a lot this year, but they need a very special three weeks to escapedistrict play.

SCHLAGLE’S ROAD IS THE TOUGHEST: Imagine coming into adistrict at 6-0 and having the toughest road out of the district? That’s whereyour Schlagle Stallions begin. Schlagle goes on the road to Bonner Springs andLansing, essentially needing a split against those programs. Schlagle “hosts”Washington at Washington High School, meaning that in a certain point of view,Schlagle has three road games in district.

BONNER SPRINGS’ LAST HURRAH IN 5A: This will be the Braves’last year, for now, in 5A districts. They move to 4A next year, but the tablecould be set for Bonner. They host both Lansing and Schlagle, its stiffestcompetition in the district.

GROUND GAME, GROUND GAME, GROUND GAME: I’ve touched on J’veyonBrowning and Johnathan Jackson enough this week. But Lansing can run the balland Washington averages 4.6 yards a carry this year. There probably won’t betoo many plays that “go vertical” in the next three weeks. The ground games arethe bread and butter of the four programs in the district. Ranier Kountz-Londonand DeAnte Ambler have combined for over 600 yards and 9 touchdowns this seasonfor the Wildcats.

WASHINGTON NEEDS TO ELIMINATE MISTAKES: Washington’s 22turnovers this season are more than the other three teams combined. No need togo beyond this point.

WHO MOVES ON? This is probably the toughest district to makea call on. There’s no overwhelming favorite and three teams are very even, while the fourth team is one that’s improving and one that’s getting hungry aswell. For the sakes of predicting, I’ll select Schlagle and Lansing, though itwould not surprise me at all to see any of the combination of Schlagle, BonnerSprings or Lansing advancing out. Again, Lansing is the squeaker of a favoriteand I think they’ll at least split their two important games. I think Schlagle’sground game on field turf could give Bonner Springs some major trouble and theStallions whipped Lansing two years ago on the road. Different teams, sure. But some of those players probably remember winning the game, so there’s nointimidation factor there.

HIGHLIGHTS: Harmon's Terrance Simmons

Harmon Hawks quarterback Terrance Simmons has been one of the best stories in Wyandotte County football the past two years.

He's grown tremendously as a quarterback and he's had to carry the team at times this year with injuries hurting the Hawks.

Above are highlights of him from this season that I believe were made by Simmons himself.

Simmons should provide the outstanding Turner defense with a big time test Friday night at home.

Is Harmon Hawk Darrin Hawkins Wyandotte County’s best overall football player?

Our highlights guy David Brox sent me an interesting email this week after he had watched highlights of a Harmon football game he had.

In the email, Brox suggested that Harmon Hawks player Darrin Hawkins is the “best all-around performer” he has seen this year.

Keep in mind that Brox has cut numerous highlights for KCK Preps and Sport Highlights Unlimited (his highlights service) throughout the year. This is not someone who has seen just three or four teams.

This summer, Hawkins was our choice for the KCKAL Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, but it’s not just on defense Hawkins is known for.

He’s a very good wide receiver – he would easily be the top guy at most Wyandotte County schools – and him and Steve Williams down in Bonner Springs would make a sick combo.

He’s filled in for Isaiah Ming at the running back position.

What’s impressive about “Hawk” is that he performs well at every single position he plays. He's like Denzel Washington or Tom Hanks - two actors who have succeeded in playing various movie roles. Like Washington or Hanks, it's also tough to find something Hawkins does not achieve well at.

There are a ton of two-way players in Wyandotte County, but it's obvious at what position most of those players excel at.

For example, no one would confuse Schlagle’s J’veyon Browning as Mike Singletary, the all-time great linebacker for the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl winning team in 1984-85. He’s a very good running back, but he’s offensive first – and that’s something you cannot forget.

Nick Rodriguez, like Hawkins, has played numerous positions. He’s now playing offensive line and while he’s stepped up for the Turner Golden Bears, you’re not going to forget he’s a linebacker.

Vernon Vaughn from Sumner Academy previously played defense. But his position is wide receiver. Last year, Armand Brisbane was a two-way player and he was known as the quarterback.

The point is, I’m not sure what position Hawkins should be categorized as.

He’s obviously a great linebacker. He’s a really good wide receiver and in the right offensive system, he would be a dynamite running back. I also think he would be a great quarterback in the “Single Wing Offense” (one like Baldwin runs) or another option-like running attack.

Hawkins is also a very smart ballplayer. He rarely makes mistakes and while I’ve seen some incredibly dumb penalties committed by all teams across Wyandotte County, Hawkins uses his head while on the field.

He’s bruiser, but he’s an incredibly smart player.

If I’m a college scout, Hawkins would be near the top of my list. He’s a great utility guy who can fill a lot of skill-position needs.

Since he’s not a stats guy and does not crack the end zone a lot, he’s probably not going to win too many awards.

But there’s a very good argument that Hawkins is the best overall player in Wyandotte County and he may have the best skill-set out of anyone.

Don’t overlook him.

It’s unfortunate Hawkins is playing on a 3-3 team in Kansas City, Kan.

He has great ability that would translate well in the very successful Johnson County programs and he would be on the all-metro radar for various awards given out by media sources outside of KCK Preps.

He deserves every kind word given to him.

HIGHLIGHTS: Turner's Nick Rodriguez

Turner Golden Bears linebacker, offensive lineman and punter Nick Rodriguez has been a force for his team this year on the defensive side of the ball.

Turner head coach Allen Terrell has called Rodriguez the best defensive player he's coached at Turner.

Above are highlights of his game against Bonner Springs.

While he wore #54 against Piper, his jersey number is #8 in the highlights.
