Three hours before the Piper Pirates football team hosted
the Sumner Academy Sabres Thursday night, the football team and coaching staff
were in shirts and ties on the track watching their soccer team attempt to
advance out of regional.
It was clear that this Piper football team meant business this week and they were professional in both dress and performance on the
field later on Thursday.
Piper defeated Sumner Academy 35-12, improving to 6-3 on the
season and sweeping its district to clinch the school’s second consecutive
district title.
The fun for the Pirates began early in the game.
Running back Matt McDonald broke off an 80-yard touchdown
against the Sabres defense, his first of three touchdowns on the night.
Later in the first quarter, McDonald struck again – this time
from one-yard out.
McDonald has been an underrated running-back this year for
the Pirates. On Thursday, he also displayed the ability to make the big play on
defense.
He intercepted quarterback Neal Boyce’s pass late in the
first and took it all the way back from 64 yards for a touchdown.
McDonald’s three quick touchdowns left Piper with a 21-0
lead after the first quarter.
It was more than enough, but Paul Jones wanted to remind the
metro he can still make a big play on special teams. Jones returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown to increase
Piper’s lead to 28-0.
The Sabres offense punched back in the third quarter.
Boyce snuck in from one-yard out to narrow the Piper lead to
28-6.
But super freshman Colton Beebe struck again for the
Pirates. Beebe was on the receiving end of a 15-yard touchdown pass from
sophomore quarterback Tanner Eikenbary.
Sumner Academy senior wide receiver Marcus Allen left one
more memory for his fans to live on even after a disappointing season.
Allen scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Boyce in the fourth quarter. A
failed two-point conversion left the score at 35-12.
Sumner Academy, with the loss, concludes the season at 2-7.
