Despite missing nearly half the season, Mill Valley Jaguars running back Kendall Short finished with over 700 yards of total offense and 12 touchdowns.

Blue Valley defeats Harmon

The Harmon Hawks soccer team once again was defeated by Blue Valley in the regional final.

No final score is available yet on KSHSAA, but I'm told Harmon lost.

Big plays from McDonald, Jones propel Piper to blowout over Sumner Academy

Three hours before the Piper Pirates football team hosted the Sumner Academy Sabres Thursday night, the football team and coaching staff were in shirts and ties on the track watching their soccer team attempt to advance out of regional.

It was clear that this Piper football team meant business this week and they were professional in both dress and performance on the field later on Thursday.

Piper defeated Sumner Academy 35-12, improving to 6-3 on the season and sweeping its district to clinch the school’s second consecutive district title.

The fun for the Pirates began early in the game.

Running back Matt McDonald broke off an 80-yard touchdown against the Sabres defense, his first of three touchdowns on the night.

Later in the first quarter, McDonald struck again – this time from one-yard out.

McDonald has been an underrated running-back this year for the Pirates. On Thursday, he also displayed the ability to make the big play on defense.

He intercepted quarterback Neal Boyce’s pass late in the first and took it all the way back from 64 yards for a touchdown.

McDonald’s three quick touchdowns left Piper with a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

It was more than enough, but Paul Jones wanted to remind the metro he can still make a big play on special teams. Jones returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown to increase Piper’s lead to 28-0.

The Sabres offense punched back in the third quarter.

Boyce snuck in from one-yard out to narrow the Piper lead to 28-6.

But super freshman Colton Beebe struck again for the Pirates. Beebe was on the receiving end of a 15-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Tanner Eikenbary.

Sumner Academy senior wide receiver Marcus Allen left one more memory for his fans to live on even after a disappointing season.

Allen scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Boyce in the fourth quarter. A failed two-point conversion left the score at 35-12.

Sumner Academy, with the loss, concludes the season at 2-7.

Thursday Night Football: Piper wallops Sumner, sweeps district

There were a handful of football games tonight in Kansas City, Kan.

The county's 4A schools finished off their regular season tonight due to the playoff structure.

The Piper Pirates took care of business and defeated the Sumner Academy Sabres 35-12. The Pirates took a 28-0 lead in the first half and cruised throughout the game. The win earns Piper a perfect record in district and they finish 6-3.

Another team in our coverage area that finished its district (and in their case, regular season) perfect was the Basehor-Linwood Bobcoats. Basehor defeated a solid Perry-Lecompton team 35-28 on the road, finishing the regular season at 9-0.

Bishop Ward, meanwhile, will take an 18-game losing streak into the 2012 season. They fell 52-13 tonight against Blue Valley Southwest.

PHOTOS: Piper falls to KC Christian 6-0

Nineteen seconds in the game, the Kansas City Christian Panthers scored their first goal of the game against the Piper Pirates.

It was the beginning of an onslaught towards the home team. KC Christian added five more goals in the victory, ending Piper's season and finalizing the Pirates record at 11-6-1.

Big day of soccer in KCK

Today is an unusually important day for high school soccer in Kansas City, Kan., and Wyandotte County.

Three separate regional final games will be held today across the county.

Beginning at 3 p.m. this afternoon, four KCK teams will battle for three spots.

- At 3 p.m. today, the Piper Pirates will be hosting Kansas City Christian School in the 4A Northeast Regional 2. KC Christian enters the game with a 9-8-0 record, while Piper enters 11-5-1. KC Christian defeated Bonner Springs 1-0 in the opening round, while Piper dispatched KCK-rival Ward 2-1 in double overtime.

- At 6 p.m., the Wyandotte Bulldogs host the Turner Golden Bears in the 5A Northeast Regional 2. Turner enters the final 9-8, while Wyandotte’s 10-4-1. Wyandotte defeated Pittsburgh 10-0 in the opening round, while Turner upset Lansing 3-2 on the road.

- Also at 6 p.m., the Harmon Hawks will host Blue Valley in the 5A Northeast Regional 1 final. Harmon enters the game 12-3-1, while Blue Valley enters 8-6-3. Blue Valley defeated Bishop Miege 2-1 in double-overtime, while Harmon defeated the 2-14-2 Schlagle Stallions 4-0. Last year, Blue Valley handed the Harmon soccer team its only loss of the season. Unfortunately, that also came in the regional final.

I will for sure attend the first half of the Piper game, but I have to leave for the Unified Government’s special session at 5 p.m. If that special session is over by 6 p.m., I will attend the first half of the Wyandotte game before making it back down to City Hall of the regular session.

(For the Harmon folks: Wyandotte-Turner features two KCK teams, so that's why I would be going there. Plus, it's a lot closer to City Hall than the Harmon-Blue Valley game.)

Look for some photos later on and good luck!
