All KCK Award Candidates: Offensive POY 2011

Here is a highlight for each of the 3 players up for Offensive POY. Isaiah Ming, J'veyon Browning and Johnathan Jackson all were electric this year. It is not an easy decision as they are all 3 great RB's.

I have a lead on acquiring Isaiah's final stats so hopefully I will be able to announce this during the ceremony.

I appreciate all the feedback I have gotten from my requests for information. Putting something like this together is not simple and definitely not going to be a success with me alone. Nick Sloan and Steve Williams Sr have been great. If you would like to get involved then by all means send me an email at davidbrox@shukc.com. I am still searching for presenters and cheerleaders to attend in uniform so that they can assist with handing out trophies.

Sponsorship of awards or the event in general is available as well if you would like to tie your business or organization to this event. I am not after a profit here. Any sponsorship money received in relation to this event beyond our cost will go in full toward scholorship awards.

Best of luck to these 3 players.

All KCK Award Candidates: Play of the Year 2011

I am happy and excited to announce the 3 plays that have made the KCK Preps and SHUKC final cut for the 2011 Play of the Year in KCK. Please remember that these awards will exclude Basehor this year but they will obviously be included in upcoming seasons.

We have 2 running backs and the speed of a defensive lineman representing this years nominees.

Caleb King - INT and return for TD against Sumner

J'veyon Browning - 4th quarter circle of Harmon's defense for go ahead TD.

Isaiah Ming - Trucks a defender on the way to the end zone.

Congrats to these young men. Your attendance at the upcoming award event would be appreciated.

I would like to announce the presenter of this award will be Vernon Vaughn who would have won this award hands down last year with his 1 handed catch against Schlagle.

Thanks to coach Gray at Piper for Caleb's footage.

Through two games, former Bulldog Trinity Hall leads UMKC in scoring

UMKC Athletics
Along with former Sumner Academy great Neil Watson, another former Kansas City, Kan., and Wyandotte County basketball standout is having a good start to a season of Division 1 basketball.

Former Wyandotte Bulldogs forward Trinity Hall, one of the true underrated and under-valued gems of KCK athletics the past decade or so, is leading the UMKC Kangaroos in scoring through two games.

Though it’s early, Hall is off to a nice start.

He setting the pace for the ‘Roos with 14.0 points a game.

Along with the scoring, Trinity is contributing in other areas of the game.

He’s second in the team in rebounding, averaging 5.0 through his first two games. He also leads the team in blocks with three and steals with three.

As a sophomore, Hall appears to be well established into the team’s starting rotation. He’s started both games and if he keeps on clicking, he could make an appearance in the conference’s all-league teams.

Former Sabres great Neil Watson leads team in assists in Division 1 debut

Former Sumner Academy Sabres guard Neil Watson led Southern Mississippi in assists in the team's opening game this week.

In 25 minutes off the bench, Watson led Southern Miss with four assists and turned the ball over just once.

Since Watson red-shirted in his only season at Toledo, he's considered just a sophomore for Larry Eustachy's ball-club.

Watson was unable to connect on three shots, so he went scoreless for the night.

Still, early in his Division 1 career, Watson has displayed that he can score of the bench. In the team's only exhibition game, Watson put up 10 points for Southern Miss.

Leading the team in assists is a nice start for Watson.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Should Kansas State finish strong, Collin Klein deserves to be a Heisman finalist

Collin Klein, Heisman finalist?

Don't laugh - the case is a lot stronger than you might assume.

Following Saturday's 53-50 victory against the Texas A&M Aggies, Klein's statistics are amazing when you look at them.

Klein had six overall touchdowns in the game, five on the ground. For the season, Klein has 1,009 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns.

While much has been said about Klein's toughness, his ability to pass the ball has improved each week of the year.

Passing wise, his accuracy is nearly up to 59 percent. He has 10 touchdowns to just five interceptions this season. He's thrown for 1,504 yards - meaning he has 2,500 total yards this season and 34 overall touchdowns, which is astonishing.

Besides the 34 touchdowns and 2,500 yards, here's a point-by-point case on why Klein deserves some Heisman love.

1. Kansas State has been favored in one game the last two months. Courtesy of my Kansas State friend we'll call "King William," I was amazed to find out that despite being 8-2 and in the Top 15, the Wildcats have been favored in one game since the Kent State game. They were underdogs at home against Baylor, Missouri and Texas A&M. The only game they were favored in was against Kansas - and some Texas high schools could keep KU within two touchdowns in the first half. In other words, Kansas State has been expected to lose seven of the past eight games. Klein's the biggest reason why they've won six of those games.

2. Outside of Oklahoma, he hasn't had a bad game. He was very good against Oklahoma State in that thrilling loss. But he hasn't exactly cost Kansas State any game this season. You can put the OU loss on Oklahoma being upset after "Big Game Bob Stoops" losing his annual game they had no business losing.

3. He's taken hits this season and he's still ticking. The beatdown he's had in several games this year has been unbelievable. But he's still played very well in some games and at least well in all but one.

4. The Big 12 is arguably the best conference in America. I still prefer the defensive-minded SEC, but an argument can be made that the Big 12 is the best. Kansas State has been in the thick of it each game except the OU disaster.

5. Klein has been clutch. Kansas State was down 10 against Texas A&M reasonably late in the fourth quarter. A deep touchdown pass and a late game-tying field goal delivered that game into overtime. He led a late game-winning drive against the Miami Hurricanes. He led a late two-possession comeback against Baylor.

Those five points are why Klein deserves legitimate love for the Heisman.

If Kansas State finishes 9-3 and in the Top 15, he deserves to be a finalist.

Oregon won a 40-point game this year without their starting quarterback or runningback. Andrew Luck looked pedestrian against good competition from Oregon and USC. LSU and Alabama are mostly about their defense.

Klein deserves the love!
