KCK Football Random Thoughts

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

KCK Preps is putting in work. I am talking to people daily about football workouts, 7 on 7, highlights and the makeup of our 10 high schools. I have to admit though that twitter has made me incredibly lazy on the writing side of KCK Preps and for that I apologize. If you are not following me on twitter you are missing out on me going on random rants about KCK sports.  @OdoggBrox

It has been cool getting to chat with Nick on the sidelines during 7 on 7's. I had a ton of random thoughts I want to share and expand a little more than I can on twitter.

1.      I am a big fan of QB/WR combos. Brisbane to Vaughn was my favorite in 2010. Jackson to Williams was amazing last season. Murphy to Johnson was a very good one as well last season. I got to thinking about what combos should we look for this season.

a.       Ben Johnson is likely to be the hands down top WR this year.  I am not aware of anyone with the size and ability so Zac Hevel and Tanner Garver will likely have big seasons with Johnson as a main target.

b.      Brandon Williams will make his return to the Sabres backfield after finishing his Junior season with an injury.  Hands down he has the strongest arm in KCK and his main target this season will be Jowell Daniels.  Jowell has some tough shoes to fill but he is a skilled player who got buried behind 2 very good receivers in Marcus Allen and Vernon Vaughn.

c.       Jordan Jackson will no doubt miss the speed of Stevie Williams but senior Mason Roberts will be his main target this season.  The receiving crew at Bonner will be young and small but Roberts should have a strong season.

d.      Tanner Eikenbary and Paul Jones could end up being a very powerful force at Piper.  Jones is a threat to go every time he touches it.

2.      KCK is not short on running backs.

a.       We obviously have a star at Schlagle in J’Veyon Browning.  He is running behind an outstanding offensive line that features TJ Wallace and Stephan McIntosh.  It is difficult to imagine him not having a strong senior campaign.  I can say first hand that this young man is not resting based on his success from last season.  He is working harder and no doubt getting better in his receiving ability so watch out for him out of the back field this season.

b.      I am hearing good things out of Harmon about their RB situation.  They are going big with Javeon Williams who is the younger brother of Jamie Williams who was a force on the Sumner defensive line last season.  I will have a more accurate report in the next few weeks on this young man but the word is very positive and he will be a player to watch.

c.       Speaking of new comers everyone get ready for Jared Knernshield.  I said last night that Jared can probably go for 1k on the ground walking behind the “The Train” Kyle Dumler.  Jared is taking over the backfield after the graduation of Johnathan Jackson and I really think he will show very well.  He ran well last season in limited duty.

d.      Darion Griffin of Turner is quick and a worker.  I got my first look at him at our latest KCK Preps workout and I was impressed with his footwork.  I don’t know what Turner has on the offensive line just yet with Jarek Smalley graduating but I expect good things from Darion.

3.      Rome was not built in a year.  Yes that is a new quote and one Tim Dorian will have to keep telling himself during his first season at Bishop Ward.  I know it is 7 on 7 and Dorian is likely going to run the ball a lot BUT throwing 5 picks is not good in a night of football let alone one half of a 7 on 7 session.  I really hope the young men play hard because it is unfortunately going to be a test for these young men.  Write this down Ward and prove me wrong!

4.      I hear Piper has a new mascot.  The Piper Foxes just doesn’t have the same type of ring to it.  There is a family of foxes that hang around the Piper field and were not shy about coming to check out the action.

5.      Speaking of Piper I told Nick yesterday that Paul Jones will either be the best lockdown corner in KCK or the most penalized.  I love the physical play and I have only seen one person so far brush him off at the line.  The Basehor players called him the “Mosquito” well he is going to be annoying some receivers and some defensive backs this season.

6.      Speaking of Jones I have a list of players that can win multiple awards at our second KCK Preps award ceremony this winter.  Paul Jones, TJ Wallace, Trevon Wallace, Deante Ambler, Ben Johnson, Kyle Dumler and Colton Beebe all could land on the offensive and defensive teams.  Jones however could make a case for 3.  There was a bit of controversy about him being left off last year’s special teams.

7.      I really want to hear about Wyandotte.  I have now seen or spoken to players on 9 of our 10 schools. Shout out to Wyandotte High School players to send me an email, tweet or something.  I would love to have you guys out for a workout so you can show off what you will bring to the table and get ready for the season.

8.      Schlagle is not going to get a complete cake walk through KCK.  I don’t know what returns with the RB at Atchison but Sumner and Harmon are going to be hungry.
