Brox Football Power Rankings - Week 3

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

10. Bishop Ward (10 previous week) (0-3)

I got to watch the game against Bonner Springs and there are signs of improvement at Bishop Ward.  I can see the shell of what Schlagle looked like last year.  I will put Ward on my watch list to move up in the rankings if the improvements continue.

9. Harmon (7 previous week) 0-3

Harmon has been outscored 126-6 in 3 games and this team needs to focus on baby steps.  There is no shame in losing to Schlagle but there are few positives.  Buckle down and make some plays guys!  Tyler Stanley has taken over at QB but is running for his life right now.  The line is having some bad plays but he is also anticipating a rush that sometimes is not there.

Harmon may be challenged to win a game if they can't compete with Washington this week.

8. Sumner Academy (8 previous week) 0-3

Sumner played their heart out Friday night.  There were some key break downs in special teams that could have been demorilizing but this team fought back each time.  I know the score was 44-20 but that doesn't tell the story of this game of the year candidate.

Jowell Daniels made his play of the year nomination with his long reception.  Deon Tripp was again strong on offense and defense.

Receivers I need you to know the situation and I am going to hammer this home over the summer.  You have to know where the first down marker is as well as the goalline.  This is a two way street though that the QB has to give the time to get there.

I am real excited about the performance from Brandon Williams who threw 3 TD passes and they were dimes.  I really hope he can carry that momentum into next week.

7. Washington (9 previous week) 1-2

Congrats to Bryan Salsgiver for his first W of the season.  I got to see the highlights from the game and there were many.  Harrison to Stanfield continues to improve.  Javeon Williams got some carries this week against Atchison and did very well.

Atchison was a confident team and was undefeated until Washington made the trip up north, so this is a good win.  The team now has an opportunity to get some momentum against Harmon.  I will do this one more time and say that Washington is the favorite against Harmon.

6. Turner (6 previous week) 1-2

Good first W for Turner and the next 2 weeks are important.  You have a tune up game against Ward before playing Basehor-Linwood which is set to be a very good game.

5. Basehor-Linwood (3 previous week) 1-2

Basehor has lost now in back to back weeks against 2 very good teams.  Basehor has some senior leadership that will be tested now.  They have a game against Lansing where they can lick their wounds before 2 more tough games against Turner and Bonner Springs.

4. Wyandotte (5 previous week) 3-0It has been said a few times and we mentioned it on the broadcast.  Wyandotte is not just Dimonic McKinzy.  This team looks like a track team running all over the field.  Mario Garcia and Xavier McKinzy played well but the night belonged to Mr. Electric Antonio Moore.

300+ all purpose yards and 4 TD's is very impressive.  It is worth noting he had a long TD reception called back or you are talking about almost 400 yards.

The defense showed well with Kwasi Vann getting another interception and is making a case to be on our All KCK Preps Defensive team.

I was also impressed with DE Demetris Abernathy.  The 6'3 250 lbs defensive end is physically imposing and helped shut down the run in the second half of the game.

Allow me to start the promotion for a future KCK Preps Game of the Week.  Wyandotte can beat Schlagle and I can't wait to see the matchup.

I really would like to see a stat sheet for this squad.  There are some players who will show real well at the state level.

3. Schlagle (4  previous week) 2-1

40-0 is good enough for me.  I got my first look at Schlagle on film and I will say the offense is still a work in progress as it is a complete over haul from last years team.  This team needed to throw more without question and there is time for it to develop.  After taking the shutout against Shawnee Heights the team bounced back.  Sumner Academy is not a tune up despite their 0-3 record.
I also could use some stats for Schlagle.  Please email me if you have a link.

2. Bonner Springs (4 previous week) 3-0

Bonner Springs could have been looking ahead winning 24-7 against Bishop Ward.  Jared Knernshield broke out for some very nice gains but didn't get to finish off a drive.  Jackson did not play his best but still managed 3 total TD's.  Coach Aslin and his staff really have a challenge coming into this game.  I really think Bonner is faster than the Basehor squad and may have an advantage with the zone read they run.  If Piper gets over aggressive on defense they could get eaten up on the ground.

This is going to be a dandy.  I will be watching Kyle Dumler.  I haven't mentioned him much yet this season but I will be looking for him to dominate in this game.

1. Piper (1 previous week) 2-1

No looking ahead for Piper as they demolish Tonganoxie.  The defense is swarming to the ball and will get a test this week against Bonner Springs.  Cole Holloway is a fine running back but Piper made it clear they were not going to let him get off.  While he still got a few runs the Tonganoxie QB provided no threat but that will not be the case this week.  Over aggression can mean 6 against Bonner with Knernshield and Jackson running the read option.

KCK Preps will be at Piper for this #1 vs #2 matchup.  Once against I can't wait!!
