Mill Valley girls hammer Piper in opener

The Mill Valley Jaguars girls basketball team is widely considered the Kaw Valley League favorites entering the 2012-13 season.

They displayed why on opening night.

Behind Tanner Tripp's 22 points, Mill Valley hammered Piper 58-34 in their opening game of the season at Piper High School.

Mill Valley quickly built a sizeable lead, taking a 12-2 advantage after one quarter. The Jaguars never looked back following the strong opening quarter - they had leads of 26-14 and 43-26 after the second and third quarters.

Tripp scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the second quarter. She hit three three-pointers in the game to help Mill Valley lead by double-figures most of the way.

Stephanie Lichtenauer and MacKenzie Conklin each added 9 points in the game for the Jaguars.

Leading the way for Piper was Jessica Wayne with 9 points. Sydney Mansaw added six points and Megan Woolley scored five.

Along with Mill Valley's strong defense and Tripp's big performance, a key difference in the game was three-point shooting. Mill Valley had four three-pointers, while Piper did not make one.

Mill Valley begins 1-0 on the season, while Piper drops to 0-1 to kickoff its 2012-13 campaign.
