A correction on Dominique Wilson's stat line

Somehow, I underestimated the great game Dominique Wilson had for the Washington Wildcats this week against Schlagle.

I published in my game story that Wilson had 27 points and 18 rebounds.

In reality, it was 27 points and 20 rebounds.

Yes - a 20-20 game.

He had 11 offensive rebounds in the game, which is incredible even against a small team like Schlagle.

Wilson is now averaging around 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks a game.

Parker, Allen combine for 53 as Sabres knock off Harmon

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

Benny Parker and Marcus Allen may need to get X-Rays on their backs this weekend.

After all, the two talented Sabres guards put the entire team on their backs in Sumner Academy’s 70-58 victory against the Harmon Hawks Friday night at home.

Allen scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Parker had 25 points and dished out eight assists in the game.

Parker and Allen scored a combined 53 points.

Outside of Parker and Allen, Jowell Daniels’ six points were the leading scoring total for the Sabres. All of his points came on three-pointers.

The game featured some ugly basketball to begin with.

The two teams were tied at halftime at 23-23.

Behind Branden Roark and Michael Carson, the Hawks took a four-point lead in the third quarter. Carson was effective inside, while Roark had another solid game with 21 points. Carson had 14 points in the game.

Daniels hit two key three-pointers to propel the Sabres back to a 56-50 lead.

Allen and Parker pushed the Sabres to a 29-point fourth quarter to eventually pull away from Harmon.

With the loss, Harmon drops to 4-4 on the season. The win pushes Sumner Academy to 7-3 on the season.

A win! Cyclones earn first victory of the season after overcoming deficit against Piper

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

During his freshman season at Bishop Ward High School, C.J. Vallejo hit a huge three-pointer to send a game into overtime against the Piper Pirates in the third-place game at the Spring Hill Invitational.

Three seasons later, Vallejo may have played his single best five minutes of varsity basketball in Friday night's 52-48 victory against the Pirates at Piper High School.

In a game featuring two teams with a combined one win so far this year, the game was very even for most of the first half.

The teams exchanged the lead eight times in the opening half. Four points from freshman Colton Beebe led the Pirates to an early four-point advantage.

Cyclones junior Jon Roblez scored four points late in the opening quarter to force an 8-8 tie at the end of one.

Up three points late in the first half, it was again the freshman who came through. Beebe scored a late basket with around two seconds left to extend Piper's lead to 25-20 entering halftime.

After a slow third quarter that featured countless fouls and turnovers (mostly from Piper), Vallejo and the Cyclones went to work.

Down five at 29-24, sophomore guard Evan Brull hit a free-throw and scored a basket to push Ward's deficit down to two. Then, Vallejo's three-point play gave Ward it's first lead since early in the second quarter.

Piper sophomore Luke Long responded with a three-pointer of his own to grab the lead back for Piper at 32-30.

However, Vallejo and the Cyclones went on a game-altering run.

Spanning from the third quarter's end to the early portions of the fourth quarter, Vallejo scored eight points during a 10-0 run for Ward. The run allowed Ward to take a 40-32 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.

Behind Beebe, Calvin Johnson Jr., and Long, Piper climbed back to within two points three times in the fourth quarter.

However, they could never reach the Cyclones.

Vallejo and Brull hit four free-throws in the final 45 seconds to preserve the victory.

For Ward, it's their first victory of the season.

Ward was led by Vallejo's 21 points, while Brull had 11 and Roblez scored six points. Piper was led by Beebe and Long, who each scored 10 points.

Wildcats' junior class has breakout party as Washington rolls Wyandotte

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

For the past three or four years, the Wyandotte Bulldogs have always played the Washington Wildcats close.

There's been double-overtime games. There have been buzzer-beaters. There have been shootouts.

On Friday night, there was no drama whatsoever.

The Wildcats dominated Wyandotte 78-52, winning their third straight game after starting the season 1-3.

Dominique Wilson, despite being triple and at times quadruple-teamed by the Bulldogs defense, still managed to score 17 points in the victory.

However, it was the junior class at Washington that led the way.

The junior class combined for 42 points, with Kameron Allen leading the way with 13. Deandre King scored 10 points, while James Jappa had 8. Kendrick Williams added six, while starting point guard Jaamie Trevillion had five points.

Washington jumped all over Wyandotte from the beginning, taking a 21-9 lead into the second quarter and a 43-24 lead into the lockerroom.

Adrian Goodlow led the way for Wyandotte with 15 points, while Shaquille Smith added 14.

Wyandotte remains winless on the season.

"Big Ben" comes up huge in Basehor victory

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

Stop if you've heard this one before - Ben Johnson and the Murphy Twins were key to a victory by the Basehor-Linwood basketball team.

The "Big 3" combined for 48 points in Basehor's 67-53 victory on the road against Mill Valley.

Johnson led the way with 20 points, while Colin Murphy contributed 19 points on the efort.

Once again, Colin Murphy had another good game from behind the three-point line. He hit three, while brother Ryan hit one. Ryan Murphy scored nine points in the victory.

Basehor controlled the game most of the way, leading 32-22 at the half and later pumping that lead to near 20 points in the third quarter.

With the win, Basehor improves to 5-0 in the Kaw Valley League and to 7-1 on the season.

All five of Basehor's victories in league have been on the road - Bishop Ward, Piper, Bonner Springs, Mill Valley and Tonganoxie.

All games except the Bonner Springs game have been won by at least 14 points. Three victorys came by 30 points or more.

The Bobcats held Mill Valley star Nathan Stacy to just 10 points.
