Shawnee Mission West upsets Harmon with free throw

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

The Harmon Hawks were up-ended in their attempt to move to the next round of the Viking Classic Tournament at Shawnee Mission West.

Harmon fell 52-51 in the final seconds after Shawnee Mission West hit a free-throw with a second left.

On their final possession, Harmon was unable to get a good look at the basket.

Branden Roark again led the way for Harmon with 27 points, while Mike "Hedo" Carson was held to just nine points.

Outside of Roark and Carson, no other Hawk scored more than five points.

It was a close game throughout.

Harmon trailed by one after the first quarter and led by two at the half. The Vikings responded to tie the game in the third period.

However, the Hawks could not quite pull it off.

Harmon falls to 4-5 on the season. After winning an in-season tournament for two years straight, Harmon has went two seasons without a tournament title.

Parker goes for 41 as Sumner throttles Spring Hill

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com, @OdoggBrox

I got word that Benny Parker went off for 41 points and 7 assists. Sumner defeated Spring Hill 84 - 63. I don't know the details of the 7 assists but with that he accounted for well over half of the offense. Parker is definetly putting the state on notice that he is ready to go to another level before giving up his back to back state titles.

Sumner faces Gardner Egerton tomorrow 8:15 PM for the title at the Spring Hill Invitational.

Good luck to the Sabres!

SHOWDOWN SATURDAY: Basehor-Linwood, Ottawa to meet in final of Basehor-Linwood Invitational

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

Just as there was at Sumner Academy a few weeks ago, there could be a preview of a 4A state tournament game this Saturday as Basehor-Linwood and Ottawa will meet in the final of the Basehor-Linwood Invitational.

Basehor-Linwood earned a trip to the final after throttling Park Hill 75-43, piling up their fifth 30-point victory of the season.

Ryan Murphy, who joined his brother Colin in the 1,000-point club this week, led Basehor in scoring with 18 points. Ben Johnson had 15 points and Colin Murphy had 14 points.

However, it was guard Chase Younger who had the breakout performance for the Bobcats. The young guard hit four three-pointers in the game, scoring 17 points for Basehor-Linwood.

Just as they did in the opening round game against Pembroke Hill, Basehor dominated the second and third quarters.

Basehor outscored Park Hill 40-23 in the second and third quarters, expanding a nine-point lead in the first quarter to a 62-36 lead after three quarters.

Improving to 9-1 on the season, Basehor will now have a showdown against Ottawa, who earned their trip to the finals after Ottawa won 49-45. In that game, Ottawa's Semi Ojeleye set the school scoring record after finishing with 29 points.

Ojeleye broke Adam Hasty's scoring record.

Ottawa will enter the game undefeated.

In most polls, Basehor-Linwood and Ottawa are ranked in the top three in Kansas 4A.
