Ward's Cervantes verbals to Neosho County Community College

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

Bishop Ward soccer star Martin Cervantes Jr. - the 2011 KCK Preps Soccer Player of the Year - will be taking his skills to Neosho County Community College.

Cervantes said today that he has verbally committed to Neosho.

In Cervantes, Neosho will have a soccer player who's good at making plays in open space.

He scored 16 goals for the Cyclones this year and was named on the Kaw Valley League's First Team, voted on by the soccer coaches.

Cervantes created opportunities for himself and his teammates, nearly leading Ward to a big upset against Piper in soccer regionals. Against Perry-Lecompton in the regionals, Cervantes scored a hat-trick. He called the game his biggest of his high school career.

Neosho's men's soccer team finished 5-12 last year, possibly meaning the door could be open for Cervantes to make an immediate impact for the team.

KCK Preps - Player Spotlight - Stephan McIntosh

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

I am kicking off a project for one of my favorite personalities in KCK.  Stephan McIntosh loves to talk football.  I got the chance to talk to him while we were filming the starter videos for Schlagle and he is very excited about this upcoming season and for good reason.  Schlagle returns TJ Wallace, Tre'Von Wallace, DJ Sayles, J'veyon Browning and the man himself Stephan McIntosh.  Deante Ambler joins the team as well next year so there is a lot of reason for optimism in Stallion country.

I think the thing that sticks out most to me when watching McIntosh is that he is rarly pushed back.  In fact I don't recall a play in evaluating this film where that took place.  The key to stopping the run is penetration and McIntosh will have none of that.  With over 2200 yards on the ground McIntosh and the Stallions were a train pushing down the tracks at full speed.

Tre'Von Wallace wins Atchison Final Flurry

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

Tre'Von Wallace improved to 19-3 as he came in first place in the 285 pound weight class at the Atchison Final Flurry.  Tre'Von needs two more victories to meet his goal of breaking the Schlagle wins record.  We wish him the best as he pushes forward with that goal.

Darien Willis Back on Track

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

Defeat sometimes is a necessary evil to get you refocused.  You see it all the time in team sports but the same is true for individual sports as well.  Darien Willis finished second for the first time last week and faced a bit of a crossroad.  You can easily pout about your first loss or get reenergized to work harder and get back in the winners circle.  Darien chose to work harder and it paid off Saturday as he finished first at the SM North Invitational.

KCK Preps Game of the Week - Wyandotte and Schlagle

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com, like KCK Preps on facebook, @OdoggBrox on twitter

I made my first attempt at editing down a game and uploading it on youtube. Takes the commercials out of the equation on ustream. I will attempt to do this for each of the games we do going forward. I will work on Washington vs Sumner over the next few days.

POLL: Which game should KCK Preps broadcast this upcoming week?

One thing KCK Preps has wanted to do for a while is get the public to help us choose what we do.

The next two days, you have a chance to select which game KCK Preps will be broadcasting via live Internet stream.

The four games up for vote are:

1. Bonner Springs at Piper, Tuesday
2. Bonner Springs at Bishop Ward, Friday
3. Schlagle at Sumner Academy, Friday
4. Turner at Basehor-Linwood, Friday

Since one game on this list is on a Tuesday, the voting will likely be closed sometime on Monday evening.

For those wondering why the Washington-Harmon game is not listed, I've been told that Metro Sports is broadcasting it. While we're trying to do good on our broadcast, no one but our relatives will probably pick KCK Preps against Metro Sports. And even then - my own relatives will pick Metro Sports over KCK Preps. We wish the Metro guys well on the call! Plus, it wouldn't be good for one KCK game to monopolize the coverage.

I will be at the Bonner Springs-Piper games on Tuesday regardless of the vote, so Bonner or Piper fans shouldn't feel too bad if you guys lose out.

This poll is squarely for the broadcast portion of it.

For Bonner, Piper, Turner and Ward fans - we haven't done a live broadcast of your games yet. This might be a good incentive for you to pass this link around and get people to vote early and often until Monday evening.
