As they were working to avoid a major upset Tuesday, the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats were unaware of the events going on roughly 30 minutes south of Turner High School.
At Mill Valley High School, the Mill Valley Jaguars were in the process of pulling a big-time upset against the two-loss Lansing Lions.
The upset bug, however, was squashed by the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats.
Basehor used a four-prong attack Tuesday night to defeat the Turner Golden Bears 75-56 on the road, completing a perfect record away from Basehor-Linwood High School this season.
And most importantly, they can now win the Kaw Valley League title without sharing it with Lansing if they beat Bonner Springs Friday night.
In a fact that will not shock anyone who remotely follows the Kaw Valley League, Colin and Ryan Murphy were the leading scorers of the game - and both were instrumental to Basehor's quick 13-2 start.
The twins combined for 12 of Basehor's first 18 points in the game.
To their credit, Turner fought back as they did in the first game between the two teams earlier this season. Turner cut Basehor's 11-point lead to four points near the end of the first quarter.
However, Basehor's Ben Johnson and Ryan Murphy began taking the game over. Johnson scored Basehor's next 8 points to help the Bobcats extend their lead to 25-15 early in the second quarter.
With the lead 8 points at 28-20, Ryan Murphy went on a bit of a run himself. He scored Basehor's next eight points in the game to extend the lead to 36-23.
Overall in the second quarter, Ryan Murphy had 8 points, but it was Johnson's 10 that sparked Basehor.
Against Lansing last Friday, Johnson had just one point, but played great defense and was huge in the rebounding area.
"Teams are starting to pay a lot more attention to him," said Mike McBride, Basehor's head coach. "Colin and Ryan are starting to feed off of him. But he's quite the athlete."
Basehor ended any hope of a Turner upset with an 18-6 run to begin the second half. Sophomore Chase Younger, who had another good game, hit an opening three-pointer to begin the run.
Johnson put home a break away slam and Ryan Murphy again dominated the paint. Whenever he got the ball in deep, Murphy finished.
Though the game was far from perfect, McBride was satisfied with his team's effort.
"It was a big time trap game," McBride said. "It's right after Lansing and right before sub-state. I was pleased with our effort."
Ryan Murphy finished with a game-high 20 points, while Colin Murphy scored 18. Johnson finished with 15 and the sophomore Younger had yet another game in double-figures with 16 points.
For Turner, Eric Dougherty's 13 points were the team-high for the Golden Bears. Freshman Will McKnight had 12 points for the Golden Bears.
