Basehor's Ben Johnson offered by Jayhawks

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

Basehor-Linwood Bobcats tight end Ben Johnson, one of the top tight ends in the State of Kansas, has been offered by the University of Kansas.

Johnson received the offer today by KU after he recently visited the school during the 2012 Junior Day event. The offer was confirmed to KCK Preps by his father this afternoon.

Last year for Basehor, he had 56 receptions for 954 yards and 12 touchdowns. He averaged over 17 yards a catch for Basehor's high-flying offensive attack that was coordinated by Basehor quarterback Colin Murphy.

In a game against Bonner Springs, Johnson had 9 receptions, 185 yards and 3 touchdowns. On defense, Johnson had 57 tackles and two sacks.

Johnson is an athletic player and would help stretch the field, even as a tight-end. He possesses great hands and could create a match-up problem for linebackers due to his athleticism.

He's also one of the top rebounders in the Kaw Valley League for the Basehor basketball team.

I am kicking off a project for the Lady Sabres to review their season. I am in the very early stages but I enjoyed the team video I did for Bonner Springs football. I will have to let the creative juices flow as I put this one together for the Lady Sabres. Check out their highlights from a few weeks back against Washington on the road.

I am getting some music from the ladies so I picked one to get things started.

Trap averted: Basehor's bigs too much for Turner to handle as they clinch share of KVL title

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

As they were working to avoid a major upset Tuesday, the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats were unaware of the events going on roughly 30 minutes south of Turner High School.

At Mill Valley High School, the Mill Valley Jaguars were in the process of pulling a big-time upset against the two-loss Lansing Lions.

The upset bug, however, was squashed by the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats.

Basehor used a four-prong attack Tuesday night to defeat the Turner Golden Bears 75-56 on the road, completing a perfect record away from Basehor-Linwood High School this season.

And most importantly, they can now win the Kaw Valley League title without sharing it with Lansing if they beat Bonner Springs Friday night.

In a fact that will not shock anyone who remotely follows the Kaw Valley League, Colin and Ryan Murphy were the leading scorers of the game - and both were instrumental to Basehor's quick 13-2 start.

The twins combined for 12 of Basehor's first 18 points in the game.

To their credit, Turner fought back as they did in the first game between the two teams earlier this season. Turner cut Basehor's 11-point lead to four points near the end of the first quarter.

However, Basehor's Ben Johnson and Ryan Murphy began taking the game over. Johnson scored Basehor's next 8 points to help the Bobcats extend their lead to 25-15 early in the second quarter.

With the lead 8 points at 28-20, Ryan Murphy went on a bit of a run himself. He scored Basehor's next eight points in the game to extend the lead to 36-23.

Overall in the second quarter, Ryan Murphy had 8 points, but it was Johnson's 10 that sparked Basehor.

Against Lansing last Friday, Johnson had just one point, but played great defense and was huge in the rebounding area.

"Teams are starting to pay a lot more attention to him," said Mike McBride, Basehor's head coach. "Colin and Ryan are starting to feed off of him. But he's quite the athlete."

Basehor ended any hope of a Turner upset with an 18-6 run to begin the second half. Sophomore Chase Younger, who had another good game, hit an opening three-pointer to begin the run.

Johnson put home a break away slam and Ryan Murphy again dominated the paint. Whenever he got the ball in deep, Murphy finished.

Though the game was far from perfect, McBride was satisfied with his team's effort.

"It was a big time trap game," McBride said. "It's right after Lansing and right before sub-state. I was pleased with our effort."

Ryan Murphy finished with a game-high 20 points, while Colin Murphy scored 18. Johnson finished with 15 and the sophomore Younger had yet another game in double-figures with 16 points.

For Turner, Eric Dougherty's 13 points were the team-high for the Golden Bears. Freshman Will McKnight had 12 points for the Golden Bears.

KVL Girls: Bonner hammers Ward in fourth quarter, Tonganoxie defeats Piper

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

Here are Tuesday's Kaw Valley League's results in girls basketball.

BONNER SPRINGS 61, Bishop Ward 41 - The Bishop Ward Cyclones fought and battled with the Bonner Springs girls basketball team earlier this year. For three quarters, they did so again Tuesday night - trailing by just six points at the end of three.

The fourth quarter was a different story, as Ward was outscored 19-5.

Hanna Barnhart's game-high 19 points were not enough, as Bonner Springs improved to 18-1 on the season. Yessenia Hernandez and Anna Deegan led the way for Bonner Springs, with 18 points a piece.

Erica Wilson scored 9 points, while Haley Hoffine added 6. Bishop Ward's Taylor Williams scored 10 points for the Cyclones.

-----

Basehor-Linwood 72, TURNER 35 - Bailey Hooker's 20 points were a game-high for the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats girls team. Basehor opened up a 19-4 lead in the first quarter and really had no issue with Turner from there. Basehor continued to pull away in the second half and 11 players ende up scoring in the game.

-----

TONGANOXIE 37, Piper 29 - Hannah Kemp's 10 points and Jenny Whitledge's 9 helped Tonganoxie overcome a small half-time deficit to complete the sweep of the Piper Pirates. Piper led 14-13 at the half, but the Chieftains outscored Piper 14-4 to take a nine-point lead.

Whitney Morrow scored 12 points for Piper. Tavia Brown added 6 points inside for Tonganoxie.

Brown and other Chieftain defenders did a nice job on super fresman Tyler Johnson, who was limited to just four points in the game.

KVL Recaps: Mill Valley shocks Lansing, Bonner pummels Ward on senior night

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

There was a major upset in the Kaw Valley League that shook up the league race Tuesday night.

Lansing, coming in tied with Basehor-Linwood in the Kaw Valley League race, was upset by Mill Valley on the road tonight. The Lions were defeated 77-62.

Here are the full recaps from the Kaw Valley League boys side.

MILL VALLEY 77, Lansing 62 – Izaiah Grice’s seven three-pointers and 28 points were a game-high for the Lansing Lions tonight.

Unfortunately, it did nothing to stop Mill Valley’s plan of attack.

Nathan Stacy’s team-high 18 points helped the Jaguars pull off the biggest upset in the Kaw Valley League this year. After a close first quarter, Mill Valley jumped on the Lions in the second quarter, taking a 37-26 lead into the half.

Brett Hamilton scored a career-high 17 points, while Kyle Kain also had a career-high with 15 points.

Lansing lost the game despite hitting 10 three-pointers in the game. Joe Schneider had 14 points in the loss.

With the loss and with Basehor-Linwood’s win against Turner, Lansing can only win a share of the Kaw Valley League title. Basehor can clinch the complete title Friday night with a win against Bonner Springs at home.

-----

BONNER SPRINGS 77, Bishop Ward 51 – The Bonner Springs Braves used nine three-pointers and a 48-point first half to put away the Bishop Ward Cyclones on senior night.

While the Braves are known for having seniors, it was a different senior that starred on Tuesday night.

Ivory Elijah scored a game-high 17 points in the win, including three three-pointers. B.J. Watson added 15 points for the Braves, while Brett Steuart had 13 points. Stevie Williams added 10 points.

C.J. Vallejo led the way for Ward with 12 points, while sophomore Evan Brull had 10 points and Jon Roblez also chipped in with 10.

Bonner led 48-23 at the half and was on cruise control from there.

-----

TONGANOXIE 65, Piper 49 – Dane Erickson continues to put up some big-time numbers for the Chieftains.

Erickson scored a game-high 27 points in the game, while no other Tonganoxie player had 8 points.

For Piper, Calvin Johnson had 15 points, which were a team-high. Luke Long scored 9 points, while freshman Colton Beebe had 6.

The young Pirates hung in there most of the way, but Tongy controlled the fourth quarter, outscoring Piper 19-10.
