Quick breakdown: Basehor-Bonner Springs III

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

One of the best rivalries in the Kansas City metro area renews for a third time tonight at Bonner Springs High School.

The 18-3 Basehor-Linwood Bobcats are looking to defeat the 16-5 Bonner Springs Braves for the third time this season.

What does Bonner need to do to pull the upset? How about Basehor's goals to win a third game against Bonner Springs?

Some quick points:

1. Bonner needs to contain Ryan Murphy....somehow. Murphy is averaging 29 points a game against Bonner Springs this year. While brother Colin led the team in scoring, Ryan has been the work-horse against Bonner Springs this season. He scored 28 points in the Bobcats' Kaw Valley League-clinching victory against Bonner Springs just last week. Limiting him would be a good idea.

2. Stevie Williams needs to find a way to achieve a big game tonight. Basehor's held Williams in check the past three years. Williams has had five straight single-figure scoring games against Basehor dating back to two years ago. That must change tonight if Bonner has any shot of an upset.

3. If I'm Bonner, I change defenses as much as possible unless you find something that works well. I'd flirt with different zones and pick spots to trap and put pressure on Basehor's guards or even the Murphy Twins. Basehor is such a terrible match-up for Bonner Springs on paper and I think Bonner has to be different to win tonight. Basehor is a very well prepared team against individual defenses, but perhaps different defensive rotations will confuse Basehor just enough for Bonner to pull the upset.

4. Despite the loss at Basehor, Bonner did some very nice things on offense. B.J. Watson was incredible not only in terms of his 20 points, but his ability to move the ball around. Several Braves missed some open looks that they normally make. Bonner's offense did a great job in creating opportunities, but they could not take advantage of them last week.

5. The Jackson Brothers need to have a big game. I don't care if it's JJ or Jordan doing the scoring. I think they have to combine for 15-20 points tonight for Bonner Springs to have a shot. Jordan Jackson can get hot, so watch him. The two average just over 11 points combined entering tonight, but I think that number has to jump up for Bonner Springs to pull the upset.

KCK Preps Game of the Week - Take 3

by David Brox, davidbrox@shuckc.com

3rd game of the week for the KCK Preps broadcast crew.  3rd game between Basehor and Bonner.  3rd chance for Bonner to knock off the powerful Basehor Bobcats.  I am expecting the Bonner and Basehor faithful to pack the gym tonight for this pivotal matchup.

We appreciate the tremendous accomodations made available to us on the Bonner broadcast network and I plan to do my best on the call.  We will be behind the scorers table so definitely come over and say hello.
I will have copies of the Bonner Springs football year in review (4 left).  Just come up and tell me Jordan Jackson TD to INT ratio (17 to 1) and a copy is yours.  I also will be giving away a free 1 game highlight for any player in KCK or KVL.  First person to find me and say Sport Highlights Unlimited gets my card for a free highlight.

The stage is set and I am beyond excited!

Good luck to Sumner, Harmon and Washington in their games as well.  We will have those scores ready when we come on at 7:30.

LET'S GET IT!

We appreciate all information about the student athletes in the area.  Keep the information coming and we will definitely post and celebrate it.

I want to thank the head wrestling coach at Piper Zach Davies for sending us the information about this years All Wyandotte County Wrestling Team.  Below are the members of the first and second team.  I know I have personally provided some updates through out the season for Sai-Vone Love and Darien Willis but obviously there is a lot of talent on the wrestling mat as our area showed well at State.

The Wyandotte County coaches met March 1st and we selected an All Wyandotte County wrestling team.  All the first team members will be meeting Monday at 4pm in the Bonner Springs Wrestling Room (inside the ymca).  Hopefully some pictures are taken and we will get them posted.

Lady Stallions Advance to Sub-State Final

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

A second KCK ladies team advanced to the sub-state finals last night.

Coach Peyton Leslie had this to say about the win. "Big props goes out to the Lady Stallions basketball team for defeating the Washington Lady Wildcats last night 51 - 39 to advance to the Sub-State Championship Saturday against Topeka Seaman @ Seaman at 7:45 pm. The Lady Stallions were led by Tanyesha Colding's 19 pts and Tia Campbell's 12 pts. Overall a great team win by the Lady Stallions good luck on Saturday's game."

I wish the Stallions the best of luck as well on Saturday vs Seaman.

COMMENTARY: Bonner Springs, Basehor rivalry far more than sports

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

Most sports rivalries peak two or three times a year, whether it's college basketball, college football or the NFL.

Duke and North Carolina, one of the best sports rivalries in the nation, only matters twice a year and it matters because of how competitive the schools are in basketball.

Sometimes, though, rivalries are more than what goes on the gridiron or the basketball court. Rivalries between two high schools can symbolize a rivalry between two cities.

As Bonner Springs and Basehor-Linwood are set to clash for a third and final time tonight at Bonner Springs High School in the 4A sub-state semifinal, it's more than a renewal of a great Kaw Valley League rivalry.

It's a renewal between two cities that compete for population, business and economic development.

My first job as an intern in journalism was to cover the City of Bonner Springs. One of my early assignments, though it's not online now, was to cover a semi-Border War between the City of Bonner Springs and City of Basehor.

In 2008, the two cities clashed on an issue regarding boundaries for economic growth. The Bonner Springs Chieftain did a great job of covering the dispute; check their article out here.

Regardless to say, there's some bad blood between the cities and there has been for a long time. Bonner Springs felt like Basehor and Leavenworth County gave them the shaft in terms of the debate.

Another grain or two of salt that's been rubbed in the Bonner Springs wound has come in terms of the populations in both cities.

Since 2000, the population of Bonner Springs has dipped 2.2 percent, not bad considering the bad luck other communities have had with keeping residents. The bad news, though, comes when you look at Basehor's growth. The city has grown by an incredible 37 percent during the same time period Bonner Springs' population has fallen a bit.

One would assume Basehor's growth has been achieved at least a little bit by Bonner Springs' residents leaving the city. After all, K-7 is really the only thing that separates the two communities.

Still, even with all of the history, it goes beyond that.

As the older generations battle through politics and economic battles, the younger students at both schools loathe each other - and yes, loathe is the right word here.

The fire burns especially with students at Bonner Springs High School.

For students at Bonner Springs - many of them sit in the now famous "Orange Crush" - they feel Basehor's student body is filled with elitists.

They feel Basehor's athletes are smug (which is not true based on my experience) and they desperately want to beat Basehor-Linwood more than any single opponent on the schedule.

Those in Bonner Springs feel this is a battle between a blue-collar team and a white-collar team.

Meanwhile, Basehor's students are quick to point out "scoreboard" - they've dominated Basehor and Bonner the past four years in football and boys basketball - and there's often a little brother mentality given to Bonner Springs by the Basehor fans.

With respect to Schlagle-Washington boys basketball and Piper-Bishop Ward (all sports), my two favorite rivalries in Wyandotte County, this rivalry is different.

It's between two cultures. It's between two communities. It's between competing cities. It's between two mind-sets.

A win by Basehor-Linwood means the status quo - another win against Bonner Springs and another opportunity at a sub-state crown.

A win by Bonner Springs would almost feel like a liberation of sorts from the recent trend of Basehor dominance. It would be arguably the biggest win in the past decade and one of the biggest wins in the past two decades.

Kaw Valley League fans celebrate Basehor-Lansing as a great rivalry.

Give me Basehor-Bonner Springs any day of the week over it. There's more bad blood and there's legit hatred between the two schools.

Friday night should be fun at Bonner Springs.

Let's do this.

A few special guests invade The Orange Crush

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

After there was some disappointment about the Bonner Springs crowd on Monday night, the Bonner Springs community and outside guests brought it tonight.

Kansas State Wildcats wide receiver Vernon Vaughn joined members of the Bonner Springs boys basketball team in the stands, including senior leaders B.J. Watson and Stevie Williams.

It was an energetic crowd tonight and hopefully just a fraction of how great "The Crush" could be come Saturday against Tonganoxie.
