Pirates football team leads the way in awards

Eight different Piper Pirates football players earned awards at last weekend's KCK Preps Awards Presentation. Head coach Chris Brindle and linebacker Colton Beebe took home two of the top three awards.

KCK Preps Prospect: Kendall Short, Mill Valley

Despite missing nearly half the season, Mill Valley Jaguars running back Kendall Short finished with over 700 yards of total offense and 12 touchdowns.

On a 2-19 team, it's tough to have silver-linings.

For the Piper Pirates, the silver-lining is they'll return most of their key contributors to next year's team that's expected to be better and more experienced.

One of the best players from Piper's team this year was Calvin Johnson Jr. Johnson's a nice little guard for the Pirates who can be explosive when he wants to be and is pretty good on the defensive end of the ball, too.

He'll need to cut down on turning the ball over just a little bit, but expect some nice things for Johnson next year.

He's definitely capable of earning more Kaw Valley League honors next year and could, perhaps, sneak on the first team.
