Schlagle Baseball Coach Stands Alone

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

A bit of concerning news was shared with me during the games tonight that I hope is addressed quickly.  Coach Wallace at Schlagle is a staff of one.  I understand that his assistant stepped down for personal reasons but it has been a few weeks and there is no imminent replacement.  I understand that the position is posted but has yet to be filled.

I hope that the district takes action quickly to get coach Wallace some help because baseball is simply not a game to be coached by one person.  I will follow up on this issue and try to update the readers of this site about progress.  If you are a parent of a player then I encourage you to reach out to the athletic director at Schlagle and contact the district.

I will not pass judgment until I reach out to the district but please take action to help get this resolved.

Sumner Falcon and Boyce Lead Sabres

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com twitter - @OdoggBrox

I got my first live look at 2012 baseball in KCK and I was impressed with what I saw from a pair of seniors at Sumner Academy.  Sumner faced Schlagle in an early season league matchup.

After falling behind 3-0 the Sabres woke up the bats and won game 1 12-3.  The 3 runs scored off Falcon were unearned as he had Schlagle hitters dazed and confused.  I do not have official totals but Falcon had 10+ strike outs.

Falcon was an all league performer last year for the Sabres and has gotten off to a great start.  He has 5 pitches in his arsenal and it worked well for him tonight.  4 and 2 seam fastball, slider, change up and his out pitch is a curve ball.  This is a dangerous combination if he is able to get ahead of hitters like he did today against the Stallions.

Neal Boyce had to make his contributions on offense for the Stallions as there weren't many balls put in play off Falcon for him to put in much work in the outfield.  His presence at the plate was clear with 4 RBI's.  There was a stiff wind blowing in which prevented a monster day for Boyce.  The lone bright spot was the play of Schlagle's center fielder Ronnell Wills.  Boyce drilled a ball to deep left center and the Wills did his best Willie Mays impression chasing it down and making an over the shoulder catch.

Falcon and Boyce and definitely two players worth getting out to see.  Congrats to the Sabres on their first win.  I will work on an update for game 2.  Vernon Birmingham was able to get some video and pictures that we will share as well.

UPDATE: Schlagle earned a 6-4 victory in game 2.

Washington Wildcat Baseball Outlook 2012

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

Shawn Lopez leads the Wildcats in his 5th season as head coach.  After some rainouts they will play their first games are Friday March 30th at Leavenworth.

Last season: 1-20

Returning starters:

Terrance McDaniel 1B
Ranier Kountz-London CF/SS
Justin Decker P/C/3B
Jourdyn Everette C/2B
DeVaughn Rucker C/2B/OF
Nathan Sanderson P/3B/2B/OF
Thomas Lopez P/OF
Trey Stowe P/2B

Top Newcomers:

Anthony Morman P/C/SS/3B
Lloyd Stanfield OF
Clarence Buford OF
Greg Fears UTL

Season outlook from the coach:

In my first three years at Washington we had finished either first or second in the KCAL. However, last season that trend came to an abrupt halt as we finished just 1-20. With the addition of some new players mixed with our returning players we are working toward bouncing back strong this season.

I appreciate the information from coach Lopez and wish him and the Wildcats the best of luck in their season.
