Sumner Sweeps Atchison - GAME ON!

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

"We looked ugly doing it, but our guys stayed focused and hungry for 14 innings."  Sumner Head Coach Cecil Christwell.

Sumner Academy took the trip to Atchison who was leading the KCAL and came home with 2 huge wins.  This moves Sumner to an overall record of 8-6 and 5-1 in league who will now get to wait for a show down with Wyandotte May 7th.

Game 1 saw Sumner nursing a 4-3 lead in the 5th inning.  Sumner scored 3 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th to push out to a 9-4 lead heading into the 7th.  Atchison was not done as they scored 3 runs in the 9th inning.  Sam Falcon came on to pitch in the 7th to get the save.

John Hale pitched 6 innings and got the win for the Sabres.  Neal Boyce, Philip Morris and Brett Nave all had 2 RBI's to help pace the Sabres on offense.

Game 2 was about as sloppy as it can get.  The final score was 12-6.  Atchison scored 5 of their 6 runs off of 4 errors.  Falcon struck out 5 and walks 0 to secure his 4th win of the season.  He carried a big stick as well going 3 for 5, 2 (2B), 2 RBI's, 3 runs scored.  Atchison had 6 errors in the game.

The kid (Falcon) has a 1.50 ERA in 32 and 2/3rds innings 41K and 13 walks.  24 for 40 at the plate for a .625 average, 9 doubles, 6 triples, 15 RBI's, 10 walks.  I only mention the walks because that meanss his on base % is .760, Slugging 1.125.  He just struck out tonight for the first time this season.

I digress but these numbers are silly (in a good way).

The play of the day came with no outs in the inning.  Atchison had runners on first and second when Neal Boyce made a diving catch in left center.  He then doubled the runner up at second base.

Boyce after today is batting .562, 18 for 32, 15 RBI's, 7 doubles and 2 triples.  His range is in the out field is above average and has a strong arm.

This is a huge sweep for the Sabres and are being led by two very good players.  Wyandotte travels to Atchison next week to put a clearer picture on the KCAL race.

David Brox Wall of Fame 2012

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

I love my man cave.  I have the flat screen for game days and I obviously have some sports memorabilia on the wall.  I have a ton of space and one thing I am going to establish with my work here at KCK Preps is a "Brox Wall of Fame".  I will select 5 to 6 pictures that will be on my wall until I leave this place.  Considering the property value of homes in the greater kansas city area are on a steady decline that is going to be a long time.

1.  Jordan and Johnathan Jackson quite honestly helped me see that I can get on board with watching high school sports outside of my cousin Vernon Vaughn.  The character and leadership of Johnathan Jackson will not be soon forgotten by me and I hope many in the Bonner Springs football program.  Their family is tremendous and I have said this a few times.  These young men are the model for what I would like my son to be when he grows up.  This is about as high of a praise as I can give anyone.

2.  Let the revolution begin.  I am no event planner but I set out on a mission to reshape how we will celebrate our athletes in our coverage area.  The support and feedback from the event was as good as I could have expected.  "Jersey Gate" could not stop what we are trying to do and I found out that morning that the vision I have is not only possible but I have the support from the community.

3.  My two favorite receivers for 2012.  Stevie Williams and Vernon Vaughn are the foundation for my business at Sport Highlights Unlimited.  Just like the Jackson brothers I am very high on this pair.  I must also mention Marlon Mitchell who plays at Blue Valley Northwest.

4.  Truly an awesome picture taken by Nick Sloan.  The story is not over for this group as McIntosh and Wallace will lead the Stallions again in 2013.  I watched a ton of film on these young men and think there is some D1 talent on this line.

5.  I have not selected an image just yet but I have to pay respect to the Murphy Twins.  I will share which photo I select but may see what Nick comes up with at their signing event Thursday at 10:45.

There are some early locks for 2013 but I won't share them just yet.  The school year is closing up quickly and it has truly been a fun first year of coverage for me.  I am looking forward to a lot more in the 2012 - 2013 year.

Blue Dogs win 105th, 106th championships

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

The Kansas City Blue Dogs AAU basketball program won their 105th title all-time as a program this weekend.

Hours later, the program won title 106.

The Blue Dogs 8th Grade team prevailed in a local tournament sponsored by ADIDAS, while the 9th Grade team in the program conquered the Bears of Tomorrow tournament at William Chrisman High School on Sunday.

Point-guard play by Kendall Dale was one of the reasons why the Blue Dog ninth-graders won the title, according to head coach Derrick Estelle.

Estelle also said the play of Kalem Harrison, James McNeal and William Jefferson was critical to the victory.

"Those guys helped us set the tone for the game," Estelle said. "James hit three straight three-point shots when we were down 12. William Jefferson's rebounding came alive in overtime."

During the ninth-grade game, Harrison displayed tremendous athleticism on the boards and defense, while also earning a dunk in the game.

It was the first title for the ninth-grade team in the program.

Meanwhile, the beat goes on for the eighth grade team.

In two separate tournaments last weekend, they went 7-1 and claimed one championship.

Zach Cahill, JaMarkus Dawn and Jordan Young performed well in the games. Dawn was one of the most underrated middle school talents in KCK last year, putting up over 19 points and 9 rebounds a game for the West Buffaloes.

"The eighth-graders are coming together and they're gelling," Estelle said.

It's the third championship in the last six weeks for the eight-graders.
