Terrell Stewart Memorial game will bring KCK talent of years past, present together

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

It's not too often some of the best high school talent in Kansas City, Kan., gets to take on former Kansas Jayhawks.

However, that's exactly what's happening Saturday night at Piper High School. And in this case, it's for a great cause.

Piper High School will be hosting the "Terrell Stewart Memorial Scholarship" game this Saturday. The game tips at 6 p.m.

Basketball fans can see former Kansas Jayhawk players Jeff Hawkins and Christian Moody, along with recent KCK legends Reese Holliday and Tra'Vaughn White. Stars from this past season - Benny Parker, Adrian Goodlow and B.J. Watson among others - will tip also be a part of the action.

The game is being held to honor Terrell Stewart, a former Piper 5th grader who died in a pool accident in 2009.

Steve Wallace, head coach of the Piper Pirates, said the game will help keep Stewart's memory alive.

"Terrell was a wonderful kid in Kansas City, Kan., that was lost too soon," Wallace said. "He and his family love basketball and this is a way to honor him and the Stewart family."

Terrell's brother D.J. played on Piper's team last year.

Fans can pay $5 a ticket to see the game. Proceeds generated from the game will be donated to the Terrell Stewart Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Along with being for a great cause, Wallace said the game should bring out some heated competition.

"Fans will get to see some match-ups you only dreamed about," Wallace said. "Who doesn't want to see Jeff Hawkins, a KCK legend, versus Benny Parker, of the new school KCK?"

Wallace and Sumner Academy assistant head coach Morris Letcher are the two organizers of the event.
