KCK Preps Track and Field Weekly Honor Roll

5-7-12 thru 5-11-12
KCK Preps will attempt to keep a weekly track and field honor roll for the 10 schools in our coverage area. The results for this honor roll were taken from result sheets from the different area meets. There are meets that have taken place where we do not have results. Please feel free to contact KCK Preps to send us meet results via e-mail or a link.

Our track expert Vernon Birmingham has reviewed the results and has named the following athletes of the week.

Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Week

Andrea Oropeza – Bishop Ward – Distance

Oropeza has spent all season in the top 3 of the KCK Preps honor roll this season. Today she sits atop both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs after her 3rd and 4th place finishes at the Kaw Valley League Championships last week.  In the 1600 she surpasses Piper’s Jordan Hall, who Andrea just beat out in the league race last week. In the 3200, Oropeza is a whole forty seconds ahead of the next best time.
Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Week

Russell Brown – Turner - Distance

Russell Brown has been a steady force in the distance runs for the Bears this season. A two time state qualifier, he won the Kaw Valley League 3200 meter run last week with a time of 10:13…15 seconds ahead of second place. Brown also delivered in the 1600 meter run, finishing 3rd behind previous athlete of the week distance runner, Brian Mosier of Piper.  Russell now leads the areas 3200 meter run and 2nd in the 1600 meter run.

KCK Preps - How Bad Do You Want It

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

I again want to thank the young men that came out to help establish this vision I have for off season workouts.  We had some of the best KCK has to offer out there as well as a couple of future star QB's.  After reviewing the film I am going to make a 3rd video based on this film.

Austin Bennett who currently is an assistant at Sumner will be a head coach.  I am not limiting him to high school either.  I talk a lot about the eye test and he passes just listening to him and how the young men respond.  I won't dive too much into that now.

I present to you now J'Veyon Browning (Schlagle), Vernon Vaughn (Sumner), Stevie Williams (Bonner Springs), Deante Ambler (Schlagle), Tanner Eikenbary (Piper), and Jordan Jackson (Bonner Springs) who put in the work to help me create KCK's version of "How Bad Do You Want It".

JOB POSTING - Schlagle Football Coach Needed

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

I am generally focused on staying positive but I need to speak frankly for this article.  What is happening at Schlagle right now in my opinion is a disgrace.  I will be more than happy to talk with anyone via a phone call or email about a counter argument to what I am about to say.

Obviously there is some confusion about what is needed in a football program that wants to be taken seriously.  First and foremost you need a head coach to establish what that program is going to be.  Step one is to get the job posted.  The second step would be to allow the coach to get started with off season activities and preparation for the summer training heading into the fall.

It is my understanding however that Schlalge has not taken step 1.  Huh?  As reported here on KCK Preps Tim Dorian left February 24th.  Forgive my eagerness and now outright concern that the job is not even posted.  I am well aware that some conversations have been had with some good candidates but this simply is not acceptable.

My opinion is simple that this is not first, second, third or even fouth rate.  I care about these young men that are working very hard this off season for the chance to do something special next year.  The crop of talent Schlagle includes some college level talent and recruiters are being turned away at the door right now because there is no coach!  Hampering their opportunities can deflate dreams and focus for these student athletes and I am embarrashed as an alumni of Schlagle right now.

Parents pick up your phones please and call the district office, principal, and athletic director.  We had the issues early in the baseball season with Coach Wallace handing an entire baseball team on his own and now this.  I mean absolutely no disrepect to anyone in the Schlagle administration.  I would be happy to hear from you and tell your side of the story but it is May 13th (Happy Mothers Day).  Almost 2 full months since Tim Dorian's exit and the job is not posted much less filled.

Let me state specifically that this whole process should have been done weeks after Dorian's exit not months.

Bonner Springs, Basehor-Linwood, Piper and I am sure a host of schools in Johnson County are having off season workouts and working the program year round.  Schlalgle has lost 2 months and everyday wasted is simply making it worse.
